Northern Greece - Thessaloniki, Kastoria, Ioannina : My 2006 trip began in Northern Greece in late March, when the wildflowers were coming out but the snows hadn't all melted. Northern Greece, parts of which didn't achieve independence from the Ottoman Empire until 1913, offered beautiful scenery and lots of history. You can read my trip report at www.wilhelmswords.com/eur2006.

Austria - Hallstatt, Zell am See, Krimml, Grossglockner : I took a train from Bratislava to Vienna, where I changed stations and trains to reach Hallstatt. While Hallstatt was beautiful, I preferred Zell am See, which I used as a base for visits to the big waterfall at Krimml, and the shrinking glacier reached by the Grossglockner road.
