Inside-Pakistan > Kathy Wilhelm  > Travel > Asia 2001 > Karakoram Highway
From Kashgar we started up the Karakoram Highway to the highest land border in the world - China meets Pakistan at 15,500 feet. After one night in yurts on the shores of Kara Kul at 12,000 feet and one in the small town of Tashkurgan, we crossed into Pakistan hours after the 9-11 attacks. With only hardly-credible rumors reaching us (no TV, radio or newspapers up here), we pushed worries aside to marvel at the scenery.

The Karakoram Highway was narrow, but we were lucky as it hadn't been washed out anywhere.
It was clear that sometimes the river overwhelmed the road
Keeping the road open and drivable is a full-time job.
We saw very little motorized traffic, and these travellers seemed well equipped for the mountains without motors.
In fact, animals sometimes outnumbered vehicles
On this stretch of the Karakoram, the mountains often glowed red
As we got higher, the mountains became more spectacular
The locals looked much more at home than we did
Approaching Kara Kul, the mountains grew higher and colder.
